The automotive industry is being challenged with strict exhaust emission limits and test scenarios.

Temperature Controlled Thermostats

Map controlled thermostats are equipped with an electrically controllable heating element, which is integrated into the wax that serves as an expansion material. The heating element is controlled by a characteristic map from the engine control unit and heats the expansion material, which leads to the opening of the coolant circuit via the thermostatic valve.

This allows the thermostat to influence the temperature of the motor much more quickly, allowing the engine to operate in the optimum range at various loads and under various operating conditions. The use of the T+H high-efficiency heating cartridges HLPA in the map controlled thermostats provide the means to continually regulate the operating temperature of the engine to an optimum level under all different driving situations and engine operating conditions, which optimizes fuel consumption, exhaust gas development and extends life span of the internal combustion engine.

SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) Systems

In the conventional SCR catalyst, the urea solution (Ad Blue) is injected directly into the drive train. However, since temperatures of 220° C are necessary for the operation of the SCR catalytic converter, the usual exhaust gas purification does not work optimally at a low engine load, during cold starts or short distance operation.

For this area, T+H offers heating solutions for the passenger car and commercial vehicle sector, which guarantees a highly efficient energy transfer to the heated medium, while meeting the requirements for leaks and durability.

Diesel Cars Retrofitting

The current discussions about diesel passenger car retrofitting are in full swing. Currently, this is mainly about the prevention of imminent driving bans in inner cities. The starting points for this are retrofit concepts both on the software side and on the hardware side (e.g. retrofitting with catalysts or other methods).

On the hardware side of the system, the use of electrical heating elements is essential. Here, T+H Automotive can offer solutions that help to meet the required emission limits.

Heated Catalysts

Electrically heated catalysts are now in the forefront as never before. The use of heated catalysts significantly shortens the cold start behavior of extremely cold engine applications, thus the pollutants of the exhaust gases can be eliminated much earlier.

Apart from a much faster start-up behavior of the catalyst, they permit a further improved atomization upon injection of an AdBlue urea solution directly onto the hot catalyst.

Türk+Hillinger heating elements are widely used for the application of heated catalysts.

Diesel and biofuels gel at minus temperatures. In the fuel, paraffin crystals form and becomes jelly-like and flaky. The flakes float in the fuel to the filter and glue themselves to the microporous filter surface. After a very short period of time, no fuel flows through the filter to the injection system. The result is that the engine loses power and stops.

Additives are not a satisfactory solution and help only to a limited extent. They may adversely affect the performance and life of the engine. In addition, these additives must be added before it gets cold.

In everyday life, we have become accustomed to the high efficiency and the broad application field of the diesel engine under demanding operating conditions. Through the heating of diesel fuel conveying components (e.g. Engine filter start / operation), our electric heating cartridges ensure that a sufficient diesel flow is guaranteed, which allows for high reliability at low ambient temperatures.

The shift away from conventional drive technology, from combustion engines to alternative drives with electric or fuel cell drives, leads to new challenges in thermomanagement.

This requires solutions for the efficient heating of the vehicle interior, the temperature control of additives or the maintenance of technical functions, i.e. de-icing and condensation.

With a broad product portfolio and the resulting synergies, Türk+Hillinger is a valuable development partner in the conception and development of customer-specific heating solutions for the realization of environmentally compatible mobility.

The current upheaval and the research and development projects of the OEM require competencies and experience of the suppliers. As a development and system partner, T+H is involved in numerous projects and is closely collaborating with the research and development departments of multiple automotive customers.

Fuel cell drive systems require various electrical heating elements for heating individual system components.   The fuel cell drive systems also need thermocouples and sensors for temperature monitoring and control, as well as wire-based resistors.

The applications range from frost protection, to optimum temperature control of individual components, to the heating of the passenger compartment.

Another field of application is, for instance, Braking Resistors as starting and braking aids for electric drives.
